Destroyed
buildings on both sides of this wide street welcomed us as we drove
towards Bala Hesar -- presidential palace during the last
days of Hafiz ullah Amin and where invading Soviet troops killed him
with his family and some 300 of his defense guard.
This jewel of a building was repaired only to be destroyed again
unfortunately next time by Afghans themselves.
The buildings on this road include huge complex with ten or more
massive building that housed the Soviet Embassy during the occupation
years, making it the real power center of the time.
Currently, the partially destroyed complex is housing internally
displaced Afghans, most of whom are from Shomali areas.
There is an eerie feeling in the surroundings as the presence and
destruction of war are felt all around.
